Many people know Pulaski, Tennessee as the birthplace of the Ku Klux Klan, a group associated with racism and hate in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Many people also know that Pulaski is a modern, friendly city where both blacks and whites live and work together and have a good life. Some are also aware of the history of how, back in the Civil War, African-American troops served and fought well for he Union Army while stationed in Pulaski at Fort Lilly. And in Pulaski, one can find a Civil War memorial to African American troops.

During the Civil War, the 110th and 111th Regiments of the US Colored Troops of the United States Army served well at Fort Lilly in protecting both rail and highway supply lines to points farther south.

But that part of history was not well known for many years. Pulaski resident Ms. Vivian Sims was a leader in the push to make people more aware of the black history of Pulaski.

Ms. Sims had a long and distinguished career as an educator for 47. She was also the first black elementary school principal in Giles County.

In 2021, local residents formed the Community Advisory Council on Inclusive Recognition & Acknowledgement. That group led in the creation of the monument "Resurrection of Valor" statue at the Cave Springs Heritage Plaza, and has plans for other projects to promote the history of African Americans in Giles County.

Pulaski is a beautiful small southern city, rich in history and beauty and good southern hospitality. Those who have never been there have missed a treat. And all who have not been there recently should plan a visit soon.
